Total hip replacement
Orthopedics: bones & joints · Planning care in Germany and Czechia
- Clinical name
- Total hip arthroplasty (THA / THR)
- German
- Hüfttotalendoprothese (Hüft-TEP)
- Czech
- Totální endoprotéza kyčelního kloubu (TEP kyčle)
Replaces the damaged hip ball and socket with an artificial joint, commonly for advanced osteoarthritis when pain and limited mobility persist despite non-surgical care. Implant choice and surgical approach depend on the orthopaedic assessment.

Time, hospital stay & appointments
Times are planning guides, not national averages or guaranteed schedules. They reflect published provider examples and patient guidance. The treating team confirms the individual plan, time needed near the clinic and fitness to travel. Waiting lists are not included.
- Procedure or course duration
- Around 1–2 hours for the operation in the joint-replacement information from Gemeinschaftskrankenhaus Bonn. Anaesthesia preparation and recovery-room time are additional.
- Hospital stay
- Several inpatient days. A German provider example, Hospital zum Heiligen Geist Kempen, describes 7–10 inpatient days in its pathway and 2–3 weeks of rehabilitation in its FAQ. This is one protocol, not a country average.
- Visits and repeat attendance
- Plan an orthopaedic assessment and pre-anaesthetic assessment, 1 surgical admission, wound care and later orthopaedic reviews. Rehabilitation involves repeated sessions; the provider must confirm their number and whether reviews can happen near home.
- Recovery and travel planning
- Hospital discharge is only the start of recovery. Confirm walking aids, weight-bearing instructions, rehabilitation placement and clearance for the return journey before booking travel.
Sources & finding a provider

These country-specific sources document the service or its clinical use; their inclusion does not indicate a RAUQ partnership. Case acceptance, appointment availability and payment arrangements require separate provider confirmation.
