Total knee replacement
Orthopedics: bones & joints · Planning care in Germany and Czechia
- Clinical name
- Total knee arthroplasty (TKA / TKR)
- German
- Knietotalendoprothese (Knie-TEP)
- Czech
- Totální endoprotéza kolenního kloubu (TEP kolene)
Replaces damaged joint surfaces at the knee, usually for advanced arthritis with substantial pain and functional limitation. A total replacement differs from a partial knee replacement; the affected compartments and ligament stability guide the choice.

Time, hospital stay & appointments
Times are planning guides, not national averages or guaranteed schedules. They reflect published provider examples and patient guidance. The treating team confirms the individual plan, time needed near the clinic and fitness to travel. Waiting lists are not included.
- Procedure or course duration
- The Helios Hüls patient brochure gives approximately 60–90 minutes for knee replacement. Complex or revision operations may take longer.
- Hospital stay
- Helios München West describes 4–5 inpatient days for total knee replacement. Its shorter 2–3-day figure refers to partial replacement, not this procedure. Local discharge criteria differ.
- Visits and repeat attendance
- Assessment and pre-operative checks, 1 operative admission, a wound review and subsequent surgical reviews. Add repeated physiotherapy appointments; a single hospital visit does not complete the pathway.
- Recovery and travel planning
- Rehabilitation continues after discharge and recovery develops over months. Ask the team to document mobility goals, the physiotherapy schedule and the arrangements for wound care after returning home.
Sources & finding a provider
Editorial source check: 29 October 2026. This is educational information, not an individual clinical assessment.
These country-specific sources document the service or its clinical use; their inclusion does not indicate a RAUQ partnership. Case acceptance, appointment availability and payment arrangements require separate provider confirmation.
