External-beam radiotherapy: IMRT

Oncology & cancer treatment · Planning care in Germany and Czechia

Clinical name
Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
German
Intensitätsmodulierte Strahlentherapie (IMRT)
Czech
Radioterapie s modulovanou intenzitou (IMRT)

Shapes the intensity of radiation beams around a treatment target to limit exposure of nearby tissues. Used for selected cancers as definitive, postoperative or symptom-relieving treatment. A planning CT is preparation for radiotherapy, not the treatment itself.

Time, hospital stay & appointments

Times are planning guides, not national averages or guaranteed schedules. They reflect published provider examples and patient guidance. The treating team confirms the individual plan, time needed near the clinic and fitness to travel. Waiting lists are not included.

Procedure or course duration
Many fractionated courses run on weekdays over several weeks; shorter schedules also exist. Masaryk describes beam delivery of roughly 4–10 minutes per fraction. Positioning and image checks make the appointment longer.
Hospital stay
Frequently outpatient. Inpatient care may be needed because of the cancer, concurrent treatment or general health; daily radiotherapy does not automatically mean daily hospital admission.
Visits and repeat attendance
Consultation, planning CT and treatment visits, plus clinical reviews. For illustration, a prescribed 25-fraction weekday course means 25 treatment visits over about 5 weeks, excluding planning and follow-up. This is appointment arithmetic, not a recommended regimen.
Recovery and travel planning
Ask for the written fraction schedule, expected breaks, review dates and any concurrent chemotherapy. The number of sessions cannot be inferred from the term IMRT alone.

Sources & finding a provider

Editorial source check: 29 October 2026. This is educational information, not an individual clinical assessment.

These country-specific sources document the service or its clinical use; their inclusion does not indicate a RAUQ partnership. Case acceptance, appointment availability and payment arrangements require separate provider confirmation.
