Breast-conserving cancer surgery

Oncology & cancer treatment · Planning care in Germany and Czechia

Clinical name
Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) / lumpectomy
German
Brusterhaltende Operation / Tumorektomie (Teil der BET)
Czech
Prs šetřící operace / parciální mastektomie

Removes the breast tumour with a margin of surrounding tissue while preserving the breast. Lymph-node assessment may be performed during the same operation. Suitability depends on tumour extent and the multidisciplinary treatment plan.

Time, hospital stay & appointments

Times are planning guides, not national averages or guaranteed schedules. They reflect published provider examples and patient guidance. The treating team confirms the individual plan, time needed near the clinic and fitness to travel. Waiting lists are not included.

Procedure or course duration
A lumpectomy often takes about 1 hour. Lymph-node procedures or oncoplastic reconstruction can lengthen the operation. The operation is only one part of the cancer-treatment course.
Hospital stay
Day surgery is possible for selected patients. Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute describes discharge one or several days after breast surgery; the exact operation and recovery determine the stay.
Visits and repeat attendance
Assessment and pre-operative work-up, 1 operation, then wound and pathology review. The Masaryk example places this review at about 2 weeks. A further operation may be needed for involved margins. Radiotherapy and any systemic therapy add separate appointments.
Recovery and travel planning
Radiotherapy commonly follows breast-conserving surgery. Do not plan travel around the operation alone: confirm the pathology discussion and the next oncology step.

Sources & finding a provider

These country-specific sources document the service or its clinical use; their inclusion does not indicate a RAUQ partnership. Case acceptance, appointment availability and payment arrangements require separate provider confirmation.
